In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Before creating and developing our short film we analyzed 5 different styled short films, some that had won awards and looked professional, others of which were not very complicated or popular. Through these analyzations we decided what worked and what didn't work for films and aimed with our own creation to improve on these. This applies also to the four posters and double page spread articles that we analyzed.
The form of our film compared to other short films is quite similar, cuts are used to show intensity and music is big part of the structure; however with the films that we analyzed hardly any dialogue is used and in the short film 'SIGNS' no dialogue is used at all, whereas in our short film the dialogue is as important as the music to create emotions and connections with the characters.
The narrative of our short film is linear and happens in chronological order this is dissimilar to short films like 'Education For Leisure' which rewinds time and 'Memories' which has flash backs; the aim we had in the creation of our short film was to create something that is natural and that the audience can relate to in one way or another.
The Genre of our short film is similar to those that we analyzed, it fits in with the genre of a drama because of the content however unlike other short films it connotes a deeper relationship bond that isn't often explored in short films because of its complexity and that is the relationship between a father and his teenage daughter. However the representations of this kind of relationship is not typical of the genre, although fathers and daughters are often shown arguing and disagreeing, our short film explores the deeper meaning this by portraying a realistic argument and natural reactions to the situations, this contrasts with the over exaggerated circumstances that father daughter relationships are usually explored.
The style of our film is different to those we analyzed, especially when compared to 'Education for leisure', 'SIGNS' and 'Memories' as we didn't film the footage with a purpose for the film to look like a professional project, we wanted the shots to be natural and flowing and not distract from the story line. With this in mind this style is different to a short film like 'Education for leisure' as they use extreme close ups and enhanced sounds which give an un-naturalistic feel to the film; this is something that we did not want to re-create and is the opposite of the effect we wanted to create on our audience. In 'SIGNS' another short film we analyzed, the shots are smooth and more naturalistic which is similar in many ways to the naturalistic shots of our short film.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
What have
you learned from your audience feedback?
The target audience for our short film is both female and males in the age group of 18-45 year olds, we have attempted to target this audience by including actors of those age ranges in the film and also including them on both our ancillary tasks.
We then put together a focus group to watch and comment on our short film. The strong elements of the film that the focus group picked out was the tracking shots of the characters. They also liked the music and commented that it didn't distract from the film and even added to it. The shorter shots were described as creating pace and showing that the character is panicked. The lower angle shots of the scene when the characters are on the balcony were commented on as they brought interest to the piece. Shots like the train scene and the shot of the spiraling tree were also likes because they were difference and unique to the production, the tree was especially liked because of the way in which it was shot. A final comment made by the focus group was that the short film was particularly simple but effective.
The focus group also commented on the weaknesses of the short film. Some of the weaknesses were that the shots were sometimes too long, such as the shot up the stairs and also the tree shot, but as they enjoyed the tree shot they said that they didn't mind this and that it doesn't take away anything from the short film. A comment was also made about the scene in the short film when the father is driving through the car park, the comment made was that it was too dark and you could only see the silhouette of the character, although this comment is valid, we purposely left this as we liked that you couldn't see the fathers face and only his silhouette because that was the way we edited it.
Improvements the focus group said that could be made on the short film would be different camera angles and also some close ups to give variation at different points of the short film. This something we would consider improving on as we agree that there is room for these improvements to be made.
How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
